Event Recording: TB-CAPT Satellite Session at ASLM LabCop 2022 Annual Meeting

Last week, TB-CAPT’s dissemination partner, the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM), hosted the sixth edition of their annual meeting ASLM Laboratory Systems Strengthening Community of Practice (LabCoP). The 3-day meeting was held as a hybrid event in Cape Town, South Africa, and online.

On the second day of the meeting, October 12, the TB-CAPT consortium organized a 2.5-hour satellite session, focusing on scaling solutions for near point-of-care and point-of-care molecular testing services for tuberculosis (TB) and drug-resistant TB. The session was organized in collaboration with USAID and the Stop TB Partnership.

The satellite session consisted of two parts, both moderated by TB-CAPT member Dr Marguerite Massinga Loembé.

During the first part, the TB-CAPT colleagues Dr Vinzeigh Leukes (Clinical Trial Manager, The Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics) and Dr Chad Centner (Investigator, University of Cape Town) each gave a 10-minute presentation of their work with the project. Dr Vinzeigh Leukes’s presentation focused on the TB-CAPT CORE trial, which aims at assessing the impact of making the Molbio MTB assays on the Truenat platform available at the primary healthcare level. Following his presentation, Dr Chad Centner shared insights and interim results from the TB-CAPT XDR trial, a laboratory-based feasibility study that aims at evaluating the accuracy of a new diagnostic test for drug-resistant TB (the Xpert MTB/XDR cartridge on GeneXpert) on 753 samples from patients with rifampicin-resistant TB in South Africa.

During the second part, representatives of the introducing New Tools Project (iNTP), a collaboration between USAID and the Stop TB Partnership, shared lessons learned from their work with implementing the use of Truenat instruments and tests in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, and Kenya.
